Corning and the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes Region is unique in many ways. The long and relatively narrow glacially created lakes provide a special micro climate that is very conducive to grape growing. This has led to more than 100 wineries being located here, many of which are becoming both Nationally and Internationally recognized.

There is more here than wine though, the lakes themselves provide a wide range of recreational water sports as well great fishing.

The area is also steeped in history, from the National Cemetery in Bath, to the Glenn H Curtiss Museum that features a history of man's need for speed.

About Steuben County

The county seat of Steuben County is in Bath, home of a National Cemetery with tombstones dating back to the Civil War, also located in Bath is small church with a Tiffany designed interior.

Hammondsport is on the southern tip of Keuka Lake and is home not only to the Glenn Curtiss Museum, but also close to a half dozen fine wineries.

Hornell offers a peek into the past with the Erie Railroad Depot and Museum, where visitors can see the engines and rolling stock from the heyday of rail transportation.

Corning at the southern end of the county has two excellent museums - CMOG (Corning Museum of Glass) and The Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Corning is also home to the famous Gaffer District, a downtown area that has recently undergone a complete revitalization and offers a diverse choice of food, drink and shopping with something for everyone.

The countryside in the county is some of the most beautiful you will find in the North East. Wooded hills, rivers, streams and lakes make it a must see destination for any outdoorsmen. Whether you simply want to hike the miles of trails, or fish the streams and rivers, this is a great place to kick back and relax. For the deer hunters out there, this as close to heaven as it gets.
